In Indore, the 2023 Biomedical Engineering batch conducted in Hindi at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) has been discontinued, resulting in the second consecutive inactive batch. All nine students from the 2023 batch have transitioned to the English-medium program. This shift took place through the internal branch sliding option offered to second-year students as part of the college-level counseling for engineering admissions based on merit. The decision has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the Hindi-medium program's future, as the inaugural 2022 batch with seven students also faced a similar outcome when those students left the course. Introduced in 2022 at SGSITS after receiving approval from the All India Council for Technical Education to offer engineering courses in Hindi, the Hindi-language Biomedical Engineering program struggled to attract students from the outset. While ten students enrolled in 2023, one withdrew early on, leaving the remaining nine to complete a year in the program before transitioning to the English-medium curriculum. This shift means that there are no students in the Hindi-medium program for two consecutive years. Dr. Prashant Bansod, head of the biomedical engineering department, confirmed that all students from the 2023 batch opted for the English-medium Biomedical Engineering program during the internal branch sliding process. Despite efforts by SGSITS to provide textbooks, course content, and exam flexibility in Hindi, there continues to be limited student interest, reflecting the lack of demand for promoting technical education in regional languages like Hindi in Madhya Pradesh.Scratching at branches or straying from the established path may be influenced by peer pressure or parental expectations favoring English studies. Despite the lack of Hindi resources for Biomedical Engineering, college faculty have translated course materials and provided study resources for students pursuing the program in Hindi. While facing initial challenges, college officials are committed to supporting and empowering the 12 newly enrolled students in the Biomedical Engineering program this year. The course was developed with a focus on students from Hindi medium backgrounds or rural areas, dispelling the misconception that studying in Hindi hinders job prospects. The incoming batch is being encouraged and reassured about future job opportunities, according to SGSITS director Dr. Vijay Rode.
